How Could Shockwave Help You?

Shockwaves are high energy sounds waves which are transmitted to the affected area to, modulate pain, stimulate new blood flow to an area and accelerate the bodies healing rate.

To be specific….

  • Promoting neovascularization at the tendon-bone junction

  • Stimulating proliferation of tenocytes and osteoprogenitor differentiation

  • Increasing leukocyte infiltration

  • Amplifying growth factor and protein synthesis to stimulate collagen synthesis and tissue remodelling

  • Reduces pain through hyperstimulation of nociceptors/gate-control theory of pain transmission

  • Altered pain receptor neurotransmission, and by increasing local pain-inhibiting substances

  • Increased collagen and protein synthesis

  • and lots more hypothesised effects.

  • Achillies Tendinopathy

  • Plantar Fasciitis (Heel Pain)

Frequently Asked Questions???

Shockwave is sometimes pro inflammatory or designed to stimulate an inflammatory response so some discomfort is normal. Treatment is over within minutes and patients report being able to tolerate discomfort due to the short period. We have high end kit here that you can adjust and ramp the shockwave to tolerance so give us some feedback so we can adjust to tolerance. We are generally aiming for a 5-6/10 for chronic issues. That being said some research suggests if you take as much the effects are no different other that a less pleasant session. So its a feel it to heal it not no pain no gain approach with this one.

Patients report immediate pain relief after their first treatment. However within a few hours of treatment, you may experience slight soreness. It’s been normally tolerable and will not hinder any day-to-day activity. Although we highly recommend refraining from physical activity, especially if it involves the treated area for the rest of the day after your session.

We need access to the area so please wear something that allows for that or be prepared to remove some clothing to help us access the area. Please stop taking any anti- inflammatory drugs prior to treatment if you were taking them for the condition you would like us to treat as the whole idea of the treatment is to stimulate inflammatory markers to result in a healing effect. If it is prescribed for a systemic condition continue taking your medication as normal.

Then during the session give your practitioner as much feedback as possible

This depends on your tissue response and tolerance. Anywhere between 3-6 treatments are recommended by the literature and are performed between 3-10 days apart. Whilst lots of patients report benefits following their first visit then treatment is cumulative and the healing response take place over a subsequent period of time following your course. We will recommend a course length after your initial exam and we are pretty sure you will be good to go after that!

Mens Health courses for erectile dysfunction last either 6 sessions or 12 sessions. Please check our mens health page for more information.

We charge £70 for a shockwave session. You will need an initial consultation and screening to ensure shockwave is the best choice of treatment for you,. During this session you will receive your first shockwave treatment if it is appropriate. If not a standard £50 consulatation fee will be charged and other treatment suggestions will be offered. You can pay on a card/cash/bank transfer.

If you are suitable then we will treat you on your first visit. If you are not a suitable candidate for shockwave you will only be charged for your initial consultation at the practitioners standard consultation rate and be put on another conservative treatment pathway such as those details on the treatment page of this site.

Mens health sessions are priced higher due to the amount of shots required per session, insurance, extra training and servicing at £150-200 per session

Lots of private medical companies recognise and cover the cost of shockwave therapy or sports therapy treatment. However it is your duty to find out whether your policy does cover shockwave from the practitioner you are booked in with. You will need to pay for your sessions at the point of treatment and then claim the cost back with your receipt.

Yes these will be discussed at your consultation. If Shockwave isn’t suitable for you or your condition dont worry there are lots of other ways we can help. You will not be charged for a whole course if this is the case just the cost of your consultation with your practitioner.

These are the absolute contraindications for shockwave:-

• Pregnancy over the stomach and abdomen
• Cancer / malignancy / tumours at the site of treatment

But we also like to be aware of:-

• Open wounds, recent fractures, infections, rashes, swollen and inflamed tissues
• Cancer
• Recent steroid injections to site
• Under 18 – growth plates
• Anti-coagulates
• Allergy to coupling gel
• Allodynia – hyperalgesia
• Epilepsy
• Early post operative tendon repair
• Over joint replacement / over metal or plastic work
• Cardiac pacemaker
• Pregnancy
• Major blood vessels / Major nerves
• Over hormone implants / plastic surgery implants

Shockwave and its results are pretty fantastic for sure but if you continue or don’t adjust the reason you have the condition in the first place then it wont be as effective as you might hope. That’s why during your session your practitioner will discuss lifestyle, loading factors or prescribed strength and conditioning drills as well.

Simply put our kit is expensive. Both to purchase, operate, insure and maintain. That’s why not many clinics have it.

We have a high end Storz mp100 and a Storz T Top duolith focused full clinical unit too not just an entry level one

We feel we have priced our courses very competitively and compared to the loss of earnings from surgery, the cumulative cost of to date for some of multiple unsuccessful therapy sessions or the invasiveness of injection or surgery we feel its definitely worth a shot.

In a word no! Not at all….Shockwave works on producing acoustic sound waves at a really high frequency and energy level to transmit energy radially out the unit head in to the tissue. This is different to the percussive effect of a massage gun or waves created by ultrasound. Shockwave, in another format, was initially designed for the oblation of kidney stones then developed from there due to its pain reducing side effects for those patients.

In the last 10 years we have never purchased an electrotherapy unit because, whilst they have their place, we felt we could achieve very similar effects with our hands and other modalities. Our radial shockwave that outputs up to 5.0 bar pressure, penetrates up to a depth of 4-6cm from the head at a rate of up to 21 Htz and the focused device creates x50 time more energy than the radial up to a depth of 12cm. We cant match that or the treatment effects in such a short space of time with our hands or any other electrotherapy units.

No you don’t need time off after treatment and can carry on with your normal day and you can integrate shockwave in to your current rehab plan. Specific exercise or lifestyle modification will be recommended at your session. All that we ask you to be aware of is that because one of the initial effect is down regulation of pain that you don’t go and do anything you wouldn’t normally do after your visit or train hard as you could do more damage than good.

We have high end Storz machines. Specifically a Storz Duolith SD 1 T Top Ultra focused device and a Storz mp100 radial device. These are the same units used in private hospitals and high end professional sports clubs in the premier league for example.

We are based inside Duston Sports Centre, Northampton, NN5 6EX but have clients come for shockwave from all over Northampton, Northamptonshire, Daventry, Milton Keynes, Leicester, Wellingborough, Rushden and surround areas.
